Re: Do you practice during physical exercise?
I use the training to recognize the transience of the discomfort. That's really interesting. It makes me think one could also apply "transience of discomfort" to avoiding exercising when you don't want to. I have a hard time getting motivated to exercise because I don't enjoy it - which i...

Re: Do you practice during physical exercise?
I swim 1000 meters, 43 laps in a 23.5 meter pool, MWF. I take a breath every four strokes. By the 20th lap or so I am settled in on all the technique, so from that point nothing may distract from everyday samadhi. Also do Bo staff, but it feels more like art than exercise. Can you say more about do...

Do you practice during physical exercise?
What forms of practice might one do while exercising? It seems like a good opportunity to do recitations, focus one's mind, purify negativity. Do you do this? What form does it take? Looking for suggestions/experiences of what you find helpful.

How to get rid of ant infestation outdoors without killing them?
I have hoards of ants removing all the sand in between my pavers (brick walkway). No matter how much sand I sweep back in, they just remove again (I think there are multiple nests underground). Is there something I can put in the cracks besides sand that would deter them? The reason this is a proble...

Any resources that send Daily Buddhist quotes by email?
Do you recommend a resource that sends out daily buddhist quotes? I'm looking for something I can receive through email on my laptop (not a phone app).
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Martial Arts & Buddhist Practice?
I practice in a family lineage of martial arts called Vo Binh Dinh, passed down from my father. It is considered to be a Buddhist martial art, with swordsmanship and staff work as the primary weapons. Both of these play into Vietnamese Thien, as much of our qigong lineages derive from sword and sta...

Re: Martial Arts & Buddhist Practice?
If you ever seek in person instruction, judge a place by how the people training there act overall. Look for places that feel welcoming, where people are allowed to laugh and have fun. A relaxed but genuinely respectful environment where the training is taken seriously, but the people don't take th...

Re: Martial Arts & Buddhist Practice?
If you are concerned with compassion, learning how to fight well is very desirable, especially for someone who is likely to encounter violence. It is only with training that you can manage to be in control to the extent you can exercise compassion: - By stopping harm to the person being attacked - ...

Re: Martial Arts & Buddhist Practice?
Omph, I am a newbie here too. Just starting out on my journey. Although a newbie, experiencing the dharma for the first time, I can still share the little I have seen to date. I've been a fencing enthusiast for many years. It was one of the first recognized "new olympics" sports. Of cours...

Re: Martial Arts & Buddhist Practice?
Rather than worrying about something making you aggressive, I would say that you're involved in a sport martial art then competition and constantly wanting to be better than everyone else is a bigger obstruction. On the other end, you could get involved with some group that says they teach a super ...

Re: How do you make sound a 'neutral' experience (vs. noise)?
How do you make sound a 'neutral' experience (vs. noise)? Just by practicing not pushing it away. The only thing that causes sound to be noise is the wish to not hear it. If the dog is barking just practice allowing the dog to bark. When you fully allow the dog to bark and stop wanting to push it a...

James - thank you so much for explaining in depth of your views on this. They are all important questions to ask oneself and I appreciate that you talk from personal experience rather than just having a pro/con opinion. It's a lot for me to think about which is a good. I feel a strong attraction to ...

Martial Arts & Buddhist Practice?
I heard a youtube interview with a Shaolin monk that says he uses the martial arts as a Buddhist practice. He says he does not fight an external physical enemy, but rather, he fights solo, and fights extreme views and works towards the middle way. He says he always tries to "fight the final fig...

How do you make sound a 'neutral' experience (vs. noise)?
I live in an urban environment, and I’d like to experiment with practices that would help reduce my experience of sound being irritating. I notice some noise seems to be more jarring (construction jackhammers, yelling, sirens, loud TV). Others sounds seem neutral or pleasant (birds chirping people t...

Re: Dharma practices for attachment to food?
Do you know of any practices to deal with food attachment (craving)? I'm looking for something beyond "mindful eating". I've been reading about the 18 dhatus and the contact points where attachments blossom. I've also been exploring a sutra that instruct us to visualize food as it enters ...

Are there any overlapping sutras in the Kangyur and Pali Canon
I realize that only about 5% of the Tibetan Canon has been translated ( http://read.84000.co/section/O1JC11494.html ) - but I"m still interested knowing if there are any similar Sutras in both the Tibetan Canon and Pali Canon. I've been searching by Sanskrit titles (of the Tibetan canon books) ...
