Re: Great Medicine Buddha sadhana - different than the "regular" one?

There are a few Medicine Buddha sadhanas out there from different traditions. That said they are not different deities, it’s all the same Medicine Buddha.

Re: How To Evaluate A Teacher?

I think it is also helpful to look at the teacher's students. Are longer term students compassionate, kind, wise? This is always a good sign.

Re: Three year retreat across all traditions

Speaking from my experience in the Kagyu school, 3-year retreat is generally seen as a base requirement to become a lama. Though permission to teach is not guaranteed and is still granted by one's guru, not by merely completing a retreat. Lay and monastic practitioners do 3-year retreat (with lay pr...

Also, silicon molds are relatively simple to make. So if you find a mold or a tsa-tsa you like. You can then make many copies of the mold in order to produce many tsa-tsa more quickly.

I also highly recommend Recovery Dharma. Above all though, finding a group of other people in recovery is the most important, whatever group that may be. Trying to quit all alone never works.

It’s very depressing. I’m hoping this new leader-less movement will avoid the mistakes Refuge Recovery made.

Recovery Dharma

I wanted to let those who may be interested know about Recovery Dharma https://www.recoverydharma.org/ . Recovery Dharma is a new peer-led recovery program that uses Buddhist principles to help members recover from addictions of all kinds. I say new, but really it grew out of Refuge Recovery and is ...

Also worth considering the second part of the hypothetical. “... and steal my belongings”

Shooting someone because they are stealing your stuff means you value your stuff more than you value their life. Clearly this would be negative karma.

Re: Is idiot compassion a thing?

Tai Situ Rinpoche once told a group of students of an elderly Lama not to give the elderly Lama candies and sweets anymore. Even though this Lama liked those things very much, it would damage his health and shorten his life and therefore was “idiot compassion”, his words.

Re: The Mongolian Dharmapala "Dayisun Tngri"

Are you sure the 5th Dalai Lama wrote an invocation to him as a dharmapala? If so, that's quite insulting to their culture. It's a sort of Buddhist arrogance trampling on indigenous cultures. They even dumped the Gyalpo on the Mongolians for good measure. I mean, you must have a pretty big problem ...

The point is to find a teacher you admire and have confidence in. Then, just do whatever practice they teach you, whether that be Dzogchen or something else.
