Re: Nothing Left Unsaid
Thank you David for mentioning this. I did watch the program last night on CNN and was touched by the honesty and openness between Anderson and Gloria. She was very candid about her life along with the suffering she has gone through which is also greatly projected into her paintings. Even though she...

Re: Favorite Secular Quotes
"That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd jus...

From The Pale Blue Dot : "In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future to which our species could migrate. Visit...

Re: Alan Wallace | Introduction to Dzogchen Online Course
Thanks Tom. Just visited the link and it looks quite interesting. There seems to be a really good amount of teaching which is great. I have taken a few online workshops, mostly through Tricycle and the Omega Institute but this introduction to Dzogchen really caught my attention. The price is not bad...

Re: I found this statue...
Interesting. I came across this website with many antique statues that are found in private collections. As you scroll down the page you can see numerous variations as to the number of heads and arms. Descriptions of the statues are also given. https://himalayanbuddhistart.wordpress.com/page/8/?app-...

What are the differences between reincarnation and rebirth?
I heard that Hindus believe in reincarnation but Buddhists in rebirth.
What is the difference between reincarnation and rebirth?
Not sure if a previous thread was posted on the subject.
Kind regards,
Mike

Re: What is the concept of "reality" in Buddhism?
Fleeting or momentary conditions are a part of impermanence. For example if we sit down to eat a piece of cake we can see it, smell it, lift a piece up with our spoon, place it in our mouth and enjoy the sweetness on our taste buds. After we have eaten our piece of cake…where is it? Does it still ex...

Re: Is there such a thing as almost pure evil?
I do believe that what some might call “unwholesome” does exist in different degrees. For example we might consider lying or not being truthful about something to be “unwholesome” or “wrong”. Not being truthful on a certain matter might not affect the lives of others in any perceivable or direct way...

Re: What is the concept of "reality" in Buddhism?
Thanks to all for the great "feedback". There is a lot of "food for thought" here. For a person that is not a Buddhist, such as myself, many concepts can be quite confusing. I also realize that there can be various viewpoints concerning this topic among Buddhists. Something that ...

Re: Is there such a thing as almost pure evil?
In Buddhism there is no evil at the relative level either. There are wholesome and unwholesome actions, not good and bad actions. Good and bad or good and evil presuppose intrinsic moral properties. Killing is not evil (for example). It is (normally considered) an unwholesome activity that will hav...

What is the concept of "reality" in Buddhism?
Many years ago I had a very interesting conversation with a young man who identified himself as a Buddhist. The conversation revolved around the meaning of “reality” in terms of what “is real”. After discussing the issue for quite some time, he said that everything was an illusion, in fact I was an ...

My heartfelt thanks for all of the excellent advice and "words of wisdom". start with the easy and foundational work, and this is the core teaching and practice of the Theravada tradition. Remember: You don’t build a skyscraper in air or in loose sand, you build it on a solid foundation; a...

Re: Greetings to all from a searcher
Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome. Its great being on the forum. As I began to delve into Buddhism I realized there are quite a number of different schools. In fact about less than an hour’s drive from where I live there are three different Buddhist centers (Forgive me if I misspelled any of ...

Greetings to all from a searcher
Hello to everyone, its great being here. I have been visiting the forum on and off and I have finally decided to officially become a member. As for an introduction I will try to put it into a "nutshell" and try to keep it short. Please forgive me if I do not. I grew up in in what might be ...
