Re: Democracy in the country that gave birth to democracy

I thought it was a well-known fact that my nation shafted Greeks not only in the Junta but during liberation from the Nazis. Especially the island of Crete I had a friend from there and he almost didn't talk to me because I was American. Luckily I knocked that barrier down but still I can't believe ...

Prayer Request for my Mother

She is having a rather difficult time at work with people making up lies and causing her trouble in order to get her fired or demoted in order to take her position. She refuses to engage in the bickering and rumormongering but it is causing her a great deal of mental and emotional distress. It would...

Re: zen/chan practices and the pali canon

Just a question why does it matter whether they are in Pali Canon? To know the reason for the question is to be able to give a proper answer.

Re: use of mala in zen/chan

Well, the second part means that this "stuff" is "detailed" all over the place in Chinese Buddhism. So, it's a bit like asking "Where are those practices that Buddhists do detailed?" ~~ Huifeng i just want one instruction manual or internet page or even a quote from an...

I am in a similar situation and all I can suggest is keeping an open mind and not allowing any preconceptions form. I am finding my studies to be fun and informative while keeping an open mind to see what connects with me. Nice approach Infinite. I recently attended a Theravada - based vipassana re...

Re: Compassion is more than your books.

I've been into conspiracy theories for a long, long time. When I was a young teenager I used to read articles by John Lear and especially William Cooper. I still listen to a lot of William Cooper's stuff - he was a great story teller. The thing is, although it's very entertaining, it's nearly 100% ...

Re: Buddhist opinions about the Historical Jesus

I can't tell if you are trolling or simply just trying to misrepresent what I said. What I was stating is that Divinity is what lead to the break from Judaic Tradition. There would be little point in claiming Divinity by Christians unless it was for the simple fact it would no longer give Rabbis au...

Re: Buddhist opinions about the Historical Jesus

Okay, then you admit that what got deemed 'correct' Christianity at the Council of Nicea was the divinity of Jesus and what is widely accepted by Christians throughout the globe is that Jesus is divine. Therefore, this is important to Christianity. Yes, but Infinite's point was that there was some ...

Re: Buddhist opinions about the Historical Jesus

1. Jesus didn't need to be divine for Christianity to do anything. 2. Some of the greatest, most influential "heresies" in the years following the death of Jesus posited that he was a man, not divine. 3. Furthermore, you need to re-read every single one of Paul's letters, who believed in ...

Re: Suggest Ch'an Reading

The best thing you could do would be to find a living Chan tradition and spend some time there. That will teach you much more than what you can read in some books. ~~ Huifeng Thank you for the advice. The Dharma Drum Center has someone in my State so it has peaked my curiosity about the teachings.

Re: Buddhist opinions about the Historical Jesus

It is widely held as Christian dogma that Jesus son of Mary was conceived/born without a human father. In my opinion this was added later when the mythology was compiled and written down, just like with the Buddha birth story. Institutional religions are notorious for having celibate men co...

Re: Buddhist opinions about the Historical Jesus

Glad to see that we have moved on from how ignorant we are on Jesus to you defending him. Progress indeed. No, anybody who cites Ehrman as the reference point in a discussion concerning our ability to know the historical Jesus is still pretty ignorant. But Ehrman has an uncanny ability to attract h...

Re: Suggest Ch'an Reading

Thanks for all the responses and that clears up a lot of confusion I had about Ch'an when doing research. I found most places I looked people had no clue what Ch'an was or wasn't though it makes sense that it considers itself part of the Mahayana and that the various differences are because of linea...

Re: Buddhist opinions about the Historical Jesus

For the record, there are stories relating the miraculous, virgin birth of the Buddha - so let's maintain some level of consistency in what we're regarding as "silly." See the problem here is the two can't be compared. The Buddha never claimed divinity or any sort. Jesus on the other hand...

Suggest Ch'an Reading
