I think ngondro really is an advanced practice in a lot of ways. Not only are you embarking on something that will take a ton of work to do, but as someone mentioned in another thread, I think there is an unspoken(or spoken) commitment with the teacher to finish the ngondro as prescribed. There are some used copies on Amazon of the yellow text with Rigdzin Chodrak's commentary, and there are copies of the root text that can be purchased from Garchen Institute's webstore on garchen.net.
