My relationship with my wife has improved dramatically. This, in spite of her being very committed to her Christian faith. It has been an interesting couple of years, I assure you.

Re: Direct experience of suffering by the Buddha
I think that the realization experienced by the Buddha speaks to our condition in ways that most of us, quite frankly, don't even want to admit. Is seeking pleasurable experiences actually suffering? Yes -- especially when we fail to get them, or we get them and they are lost for whatever reason. An...

Re: Malas - what do you think?
The notion that the substance of the tool magnifies the skill/intention of the user does not sit well in my mind. I feel similarly... I have heard it said that crystals seem to do things with the body's energy, but without being able to actively demonstrate that, I've not worried about it m...

Re: Malas - what do you think?
PorkChop, with the mala to which you linked, does there appear to be any kind of "finish" applied to the wood? I seem to be allergic to exposure to either certain kinds of wood or certain kids of finishes (I can't necessarily tell which yet). At that price, I can justify the "cost ris...

That's pretty much my take on it. I wouldn't dare to advocate a "door-to-door salesman" model...KeithBC wrote:I am not reluctant to talk about Buddhism, if asked. If the person shows an interest, I feel an obligation to respond to that interest.

Malas - what do you think?
Hello friends, I have seen people practice recitations with a mala and have wondered whether it is something I ought to consider doing myself. I've noticed that they can be bought online but I wasn't sure if maybe this was the sort of thing that shouldn't be purchased on amazon... I'm also curious i...

Re: Sharing Buddhism
I'm not reluctant to share about Buddhism, or anything in general really, but I'm also very quick to state plainly if I don't know something. If someone asks me about Buddhism, I let them drive the conversation and I tailor my answers based on their questions. When asked questions to which I don't k...

Re: Impossible to follow?
Thank you both very much for your thoughtful replies.
I figure anything worth doing is likely going to be challenging. It is good to put the words of the translator into some kind of context -- such a proclamation as "impossible" can lead to perplexity and doubt I think.

Impossible to follow?
I'm rereading my copy of The Three Pure Land Sutras, part of the BDK English Tripitaka. I came across this in the the Translator's Foreword for the first time I read it: "Today, as it is impossible to follow the precise and complex method of visualization, simplified or syncretic forms of medit...

"Hanging out in a lotus flower/bud " I presume is those people who still have doubt in Amitabha PL. OR those that have committed some or great negative karma as stated in Contemplation Sutra that belong to the lower graded rebirth. This is how I understood it when I read it it. It seemed ...

Re: When do you think the US will have a Buddhist president?
I don't expect to live long enough to see a Buddhist become President of the United States. There are far too few Buddhists [and far to many closed-minded Christians) in this country to support such a thing happening, in my opinion. I really couldn't evaluate the pros/cons of such a happenstance, as...

Re: Enlightened Masters
I have not met anyone personally who I have ever believed might be a fully enlightened being, nor have I ever met anyone who I was aware had any kind of supernatural power. I have met a few who I have decided might be advanced on the path, stream-enterers and the like, but who am I really to say? I ...
