When I have re-strung malas for other people I have often found that the tassel is constructed around the knot or crimp so I have always assumed they were for aesthetic purposes. If you string on wire it can be useful to put a tassel on the crimp to cover any sharp edges or pointy wire ends but it a...

If you don't have a bead shop handy but are near a fishing shop then you want to look out for what they call trace wire, it is used as a hook link for catching fish with sharp teeth. It is usually kink-resistant plastic coated wire and can easily be cut with a pair of shears and secured with a crimp...
