Buddha-dharmas by the roadside
are empty, some may say.
But in dark of night,
they reflect the light,
and safely guide the way.

Re: Knots
I've found that I have become accustomed to simply observing the physical and mental qualities of any unpleasant emotions; I don't fret about any unpleasantness that arises, and by and large I don't even wish that unpleasant feelings would diminish should they come up. Nothing is ever permanent. I h...

Re: Songs stuck in head.
A reliable way to break a looping song is to sing, in your mind, another song in its stead. It seems to disrupt the temporarily habit-forming rhythm of the original song.

Yes - still not working today, though with a different line number for the error.

They are not going in...they are coming out (or out from behind Amitabha's house): "And furthermore, O Sariputra, in this land there are all sorts of strange and wondrously colored birds. White Cranes and peacocks, parrots and mynah birds and other sorts of birds having melodious voices and fa...

Re: Buddhism on God
Well, you surely have a set of very original views, what can I say? Nevertheless those are your interpretations. It would be very hard to find justification for them in any canon. The views you describe are neither from the religions of the book or Buddhism. You try to reconcile them, but I'm...

Re: Buddhism on God
It's what it is, whether you like it or not. I'm not to blame for your soft spot concerning Christianity. Your little apologetic arguments can't be used to dismiss any reasonable critic to a worldview that includes an Abrahamic god, not mattering the justifications Christians tried to put forward. ...

Re: Greetings to all from a searcher
Hello to everyone, its great being here. I left the denomination and eventually drifted into Catholicism for a number of years. I was intrigued by the mystical side of Catholicism especially through the writings of St. John of the Cross and Teresa de Avila. Through these Catholic mystics I was expo...

Re: Buddhism on God
Regarding the Tanakh creation myth, the key is to clarify what exactly is being created. It's a man, in the image of God. If it said, 'Man was created in the image of the Guru', it might perhaps be more acceptable to modern Buddhists. Well, no actually. For two reasons: 1. It says God and it means ...

Re: Buddhism on God
There have been a few threads on DW and elsewhere on God in Buddhism: calls for room for an Abrahamic or Vedantic Godhead in Buddha Dharma have been made ("Theistic Buddhism"?) and generally shown to be incoherent. I'd like to consider the reverse: now that Buddhist traditions have had pl...

Re: Why not teach buddhism, instead of your mind?
Another translation offers this: If you can see through this, your Zen training is complete. Present a sword to a swordsman; Don't offer a poem unless you meet a poet. When speaking say one third of it; Don't give the whole thing at once. There is a paragraph a little further on, in 'Gateless Gate'...

Re: Jesus, a Buddhist?
I can see a correlation between sections of MN36: Maha-Saccaka Sutta and Genesis, and I think the overlap in meaning is significant. From my point of view as a Tibetan Buddhist meditator, they are talking about the same interior processes. The Bible definitely contains metaphorical descriptions that...

Re: Suffering as a Dharma Seal?
It seems to me that suffering is essential to understand the Buddha's teaching. So it makes sense to heighten your awareness of the states of mind we associate with it, which the recollection of Suffering does. Christianity also does this - Confession helps one to name states of personal suffering. ...

Re: Entering the Cave of Winds
I know of this practice, from many years ago, whilst with the Namgyal Rinpoche on Pitjantjatjara tribal lands in Australia. We occasioned to be sitting in a cave at the base of Uluru, that great, reddish-orange rock formation so sacred to the indigenous people there, when the topic came up. One seat...

Re: Swaying in meditation
A sense of swaying can be a good thing. If you look like you are sitting on an out of control bullet train when you meditate, then that might be a bit odd. But the swaying is okay, especially if, when you are just sitting there, you can feel it. Go online and look for pictures of the Damaru - The Dr...
