Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

I know that Eiken Kobai would disagree, not a surprise because he is the source of Pauls ideas. So what? Shall I give you names of other Japanese priests who disagree with Eiken Kobai? So you can again say 'Oh, these modernists...' ? Sorry I'm tired of this absurd 'who's a really true Shin Buddhist'...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

Steve, But, understandably, I received exactly that impression when you wrote of Rick and Paul: "I am sure that Al Bloom didn't say that to Rick either." These words are all yours, not mine. Note, too, that you didn't merely suspect or speculate that Rick was lying. No, you say that you ar...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

Ryoto, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I still will have to disagree with you. Shinran's teachings were designed for the most uneducated and simple people and to say that his teachings have some hidden scholarly message would be absolutely contrary to his intentions. That's not what I said. The...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

Steve, Ryoto wrote of modernists, "I really just don't understand why you guys say the things you say". Let me say the same. Why would Andreas say that Rick simply invented Al Bloom's comments? Is Andreas actually accusing Rick and Paul of being so enmeshed in their views that they can't t...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

Ryoto, I don't think it will change a thing regarding your views and I have written about this a million times, back in the E-Sangha days, here and in other discussions but ok, you asked a serious question, so let me give an answer. When I read direct quotes from Shinran and Rennyo then I read the t...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

I am sure that Al Bloom didn't say that to Rick either. Problem is that both - Paul and Rick - are so trapped in their literal understanding of the sutras and therefore in their attempt to force the world into an image they need to make their ego feel comfortable that they simply will misunderstand ...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

Paul Roberts said that Alfred Bloom told him point-blank, "Amida isn't real". Maybe Paul mis-remembers the incident (I doubt it), but in any case, it stands as an example of a certain kind of thinking about Buddhas and the transcendental realm(s) that is current in certain circles.] I'm q...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

No one is denying Amidas reality. It's neither a materialistic view nor a modern one trying to not getting attached to the necessary tools our mind has to use all the time, be that in describing our day to day world or anything that might transcend it. It's the basic idea of how Mahayana Buddhism tr...

Re: Understanding SHINJIN by Paul Roberts

Changing Shinshu into a form of a Buddhist fundamentalist pseudo-xtian book religion is neither a sign of 'understanding Shinjin' nor of 'understanding Shin'. :sage:

Re: your daily routine

Well, 'daily routine' actually is something I try to avoid because for me as a Shin Buddhist this smacks to much of 'I have to do this practice to achieve something'. I do have a shrine, standing Amida imported from Japan, pictures of Shinran and Rennyo, flowers, incense, bell and all and it is the ...

Re: Mystical Experience in Jodo Shinshu?

Although without doubt there are people who like to interpret Shinshu in quite a different way to the point of equating shinjin with enlightenment.
I never came across someone with that view.

What he meant is - I suppose - that in these PL schools Shinrans unique view of absolute other power is not present.

Re: Is Pure Land "Buddhism" contradictory to Buddhism?

Astus, There are two problems with a symbolic interpretation: it makes Shinshu a path of salvation without any need for personal enlightenment, since in this life there is no effort, no development, and in the next there is no place to practice but instant liberation. You tend to use narrowing terms...

Re: Is Pure Land "Buddhism" contradictory to Buddhism?

Jodo Shinshu is a beautiful tradition but it is being polluted by some materialistic scholars/priests. No, it's actually being prevented from reaching more people in the West by some followers who would make perfect Christians with their narrow literal understanding of written texts. Turning Buddhi...

Re: Is Pure Land "Buddhism" contradictory to Buddhism?

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying and you are stuck with blind text following, which was NOT was Shinran was about. But all this 'dare you, you slander the Dharma' stuff doesn't interest me and I don't consider this to be a good basis for any debate here. I've written many postings here w...

Re: Is Pure Land "Buddhism" contradictory to Buddhism?

Ryoto, well, do you think I don't know that quote by Shinran? Question: What are the characteristics of slandering the right dharma? Answer: Saying there is no Buddha, no Buddha-dharma, no bodhisattva, no bodhisattva-dharma. Deciding on such views, whether through understanding thus in one's own min...

Re: Is Pure Land "Buddhism" contradictory to Buddhism?

Dear Astus, And I have to add to this that the Shinshu interpretation is not monolithic either. There are people who view it as you said and others who view it in a different way where the Pure Land is an actual buddha-land and not a metaphor. I somehow expected that you would say this. People may v...

Re: Is Pure Land "Buddhism" contradictory to Buddhism?

Pure Land is a meanings, not the end by itself When I read this thread then this - again - seems to be the only view people have on Pure Land Buddhism and this is the only view that *may* cause the question whether it is contradictory to Buddhism or not. I don't know how many times I have tried to ...

but it didn't work in the end. The policies and standards didn't work? I didn't have that impression, it worked all pretty well and actually ES as such established a high standard for a serious multi-tradition international buddhist board. What didn't work was the anti-hack security system behind t...
