Re: Another term for "pride"?
Hi Mudra. I think I may understand pride in this context, but I agree that perhaps a better word can be used here. In terms of Joyous perseverance relating to practice, I might suggest the word 'diligence". For example, being diligent about our various practices, being diligent towards mindfuln...

Re: Breaking through the pain barriers
I don't know that this is specific to Chan meditation practice. Though what Master Hua has said can be taken literally, I think that it is good to try to break through our many barriers which we have, both physical and mental. I think that pain is only one example. Of course, I don't think we should...

Thank you malalu :smile: Please post that dedication prayer if you find it. Hi Inge, I didn't forget. It is in the "prayers and aspirations" section, but here's a link... http://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=1034" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Dedication of Merits Prayer
Here is a version of a dedication of merit's prayer that I like. By this virtue may I soon reach a Guru-Buddha-state, and lead each and every being to that state of Buddhahood. May the precious Bodhicitta not yet born, arise and grow may that born have no decline but increase forever more. In all m...

Re: The Brahma Net Sutra - Vairocana
Hi Kirtu!
This reminds me also of the Ksitigharba Sutra (Sutra of the past vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva). And yes, I like your comment in terms of the imagery. As the Sutra unfolds, it is like a "who's who" of Buddha's and Bodhisattva's that are present in the assembly!

Hi Keith. Another option may lie in the "settings" panel under "private messages". You can set the notification of a private message to "pop up" when you have a new one.
Just an alternative suggestion...

Re: Finding a teacher.
Hi Inge. I have experienced this. :consoling: Well certainly everybody is different. Some may know pretty quick that "this is my teacher", while for others it may take a while. I think in that sense it is based on each one's conditions. In the first case, one may have a strong connection t...

I would agree with this statement, Kevin. This is important, as Dhamra must meet with the conditions of the people who are practicing it. Times have changed some...Virgo wrote: They are also being taught in essentialized (yet very effective) forms for our busy world.

Re: More snoozies
I do have a bad habit of meditating at the end of the day, but I get the snoozies when I meditate mid day too. Another thing, perhaps you head is down a liitle too low, this can invite sleepiness as well... Quickly contemplating "impermanence" and the preciousness of this opportunity we h...

Re: More snoozies
Hey, Catmoon. Well, I can say that every once in a while I go through phases where this sort of thing can happen. At one point I jokingly said that I should sleep in half lotus at nightime! Anyways, from my own experience... It's not always possible, but better to try not to practice right before be...

Re: Favorite sutra?
Whereas I have not read a large amount of sutra's in their entirety, one that I have read and recited numerous times is the Sutra of the past vows of Earthstore Bodhisattva (Ksitigharba Sutra). There is great merit from reciting this sutra, especially on behalf of family members who have passed away...

Tina Turner! Well I had no idea
I think she does a good job very briefly trying to explain the essence of mantra's. This is one thing that I've noticed Westerners have a hard time understanding initially.

I find too, that Tara's mantra can be so easily integrated into activities like washing dishes, showering, driving, etc. Yes, I agree. Though I don't recite Tara's mantra, I will often recite while driving (much more calm and peaceful), doing dishes, in the grocery store (not out loud, of course ;)...

Here is another version of the Seven Limbed Prayer composed by Shantideva... Just as Manjushri and others Have made offerings ...

Re: A challenge for Keith
Found a nice quote on the subject... The six-syllable mantra has the power to counteract all your negative emotions and to bring you unimaginable benefit, but it cannot be fully effective if you do not recite it with the proper concentration. If you are always being distracted as you recite it by b...

Re: A challenge for Keith
Hi, Catmoon! If I can add briefly to what some of the others have said... As I've been taught and understand, like Keith was sort of saying, Om is the primordial "sound" or "resonance" of the universe I guess you can say. It is also used as a sort of "opening" in this w...

Hi, Catmoon.
This might not solve your problem, but it could help with the size. Provided you use windows, you could hold down "Ctrl" and press the "+" key at the same time, this "zooms" in some ("Ctrl"/"-" does the opposite).
