Re: Addiction recovery

I think the whole 12 step thing is based on christianity - and when it comes to other types of treatments, outside of the 12 step "let go and let god" deal, there is a lot of prejudice - and much of it has leaked over into the medical community - even those who are not overly christian buy...

Re: What actually makes someone a Buddhist?

I was wondering about this. Does one have to formally take Refuge to be considered a Buddhist? Does one have to follow a school or sect if you prefer? Opinions vary; imo, Refuge is not necessary, following a particular school is also not necessary. There are many who follow "Buddhayana" o...

Re: The Sacred Space

oh, I am sorry to hear about your friend and teacher. It is nice that you have his beautiful work of art to remember him by. I am thinking of buying one, found some originals for sale for $50, proceeds going to Hosier Women's School - a school for poor and uneducated women in Nepal. I would like to ...

Re: The Sacred Space

Tara, your watercolor by your friend, Ven. Gyatso, is beautiful. There is a thangka painting class coming up in my area this fall, I am hoping to get in on it. Om, thank you for posting the photos of the monastery and of your children, what a great experience for them! Is this monastery in San Anton...

Re: Miniature Buddha Paintings

Not sure if the 'chest wrapper' is found on Gautama Buddha images or only on Dhyani Buddhas. Maybe some iconography expert will chime in. Uh oh - buddhist fashion faux pas ---- The first image, the one with the purple background and the plant, was inspired by a statue I found at a flea market. I ha...

Miniature Buddha Paintings

There was a whole heck of a lot of tile left over after we did the kitchen backsplash. I decided to put it to use. What do you all think of my little paintings? They are the first I have ever done like this. ( Mostly I paint wildlife or landscapes in a realistic style ) A few of my friends have grab...

maybe, maybe not. I can't say I am really happy with the republican candidates myself, but I'd vote for Mickey Mouse if he was running against Obama.

Where has the money come from to build this plant? I heard that Obama was behind it, that we (the american taxpayers) are footing the bill. Anyone know if this is true or not?

Re: Jesus, a Buddhist?

I have found myself doing this, or at least liking the idea of it. I was raised catholic, and taught from an early age to love Jesus - and I do love the idea of him still. I think that maybe those who are interested Buddhism, but not quite ready to commit to it, might look for these comparisons to ...

Re: Another accident

I just read somewhere today that approx 4000 teenagers each year die in car accidents that result from drinking. Very sad. I remember being in that age range, you just don't think anything bad will ever happen to you. My thoughts are with these kids and their families.

Re: Question on material attachment

I have a lot of things that have been passed down to me through my family, some of them have monetary value, some just sentimental - and I plan to pass them along to my nieces later on. I don't think there is anything wrong with liking to have these things, I mean, I loved my grandparents, and famil...

Re: Jesus, a Buddhist?

Greetings, Jesus's teachings would be categorized as eternalism, a wrong view in Buddhism. Indeed - it's very simple to demonstrate, in a short period of time that Jesus was neither a Buddhist, Buddha, nor bodhisattva. Yet, some people, for some reason, insist on try to find commonalities between B...

Re: Buddhist ethics and BDSM?

There do exist animals that do have sex of the violent sort, perhaps cats may be a example and perhaps in the extreem are black widow spiders whose females devour the male in sexual act. Pretty neat system! ;) Without divulging too much information about myself, I will say that I know a bit about t...

Gregk., I haven't read all the links you posted, but have saved them for later...I am in the middle of cramming for state boards (next Saturday!) and have three important drawings to finish...but I do appreciate your time and the information you have provided to help me to better understand.

Re: I Believe in Karma and its Effects - Poll

I think I have very western views on karma, you know, that it is like some form of divine justice. And I had thought that there were plenty of non-karmic reasons for suffering. So I really can't debate or even understand a lot of what is being said here. It seems that one has to believe in reincarna...
