You shouldn't try to practice Phowa without having had the relevant oral instructions and empowerment.
This article might be helpful ( but I'm not actually recommending the Shambhala organisation itself.)

Re: Why don't Buddhists believe in Buddhist cosmology?
Your right of course chaps I'm not a "chap" I'm a woman. In the past I had the very good fortune to attend a month's Bardo retreat with a small group of other students and a high lama who gaves us all the necessary empowerments, teachings, practices etc. If you're interested in Vajrayana ...

Re: Why don't Buddhists believe in Buddhist cosmology?
Going out on a limb here... And sawing the branch off behind you. The book of the dead text which is read to the being after death could be thought of as talking someone through a bad dream or 'trip'. No. It has no function at all for someone who has not received the empowerment of the peaceful and...

Re: Buddhist ideas for the Non-Buddhist
Really qualified (and some less so, surely) people have already been doing this for many years. Better to just focus on your own practice, donate time at your center, etc. So there’s the basic ethical question- are you even qualified or educated enough to do this. Then there’s also the fact that ‘s...

At any rate, the idea that providing conventional help is of no benefit ‘from a Buddhist perspective’ is simply incorrect.

Re: If all is mind then how is Zen not monistic? II
People who practice have of a chance of awakening, especially if they have good conditions, good teacher, good sangha, and something like a good practice and an element of good luck and timing. I'd say it's "incumbent" on each practitioner to awaken at least once, so we may see that we ha...

Re: Is it permissable in Guru Yoga to choose an historical guru?
These days however, people take it upon them themselves to just make up whatever doctrine feels good to them, disregarding the clear words of the sūtras and tantras about how to follow a virtuous mentor or a guru. They buy books and attempt to practice their contents without transmission. Such peop...

Re: Emptiness practice off the cushion
Just letting go of concepts and learning to relax completely (flippy floppy) can be helpful ..... Thanks. :-) My snag with relaxing completely is that when I let/encourage this to happen, I tend to go into a kind of hypnagogic state, like a light trance. And not the spiritual kind! More like a happ...

Re: Emptiness practice off the cushion
Yes, time flies, perhaps, when a pandemic throws a monkey-wrench into our biological clocks! Anyway, what's a week or seven, or a year, among friends (in the Dharma). Thanks for your good simple tips for how to "keep empty." I find that with emptiness, dependent arising, the three marks, ...

I really am not trying to be provocative, but I am finding the lack of a coherent and rationale explanation to this without ambiguity hugely frustrating, to the extent that I am on the verge of abandoning this practice altogether. Thanks for your time all clarification welcomed! :namaste: The probl...
