Karmapa's (TTD & OTD) Occupation
Is there something out there that mandates/requires that the Karmapa be amonastic? Could the Karmapa "hang up his robes" and become a greeter at Wal-Mart? Own a dairy farm? Get married and have a family? Let his hair and beard grow and live incognito in Luxor? Would he still be Karmapa?

Re: Follow a school over a teacher?
I am hoping some here can shine some light on an issue I have been having. As a newer practitioner, I see a lot of debates and disagreements on philosophical views between different schools. For example, I have seen some people say that the Gelug view is incorrect and then provides reasons for it, ...

Re: Practicing without empowerment
As others have pointed out, it depends on the practice. There are unrestricted Chenrezig, Tara, Medicine Budda, Amithabha and Vajrasatva practices. They donr really have "empowerments" per se. They can have reading transmission or "lung". This is someone qualified to do so, reads...

Re: Are there any forms of Buddhism where ordination/priesthood does not require a 4 year degree?
So this is just something I have been interested in for a while. Does anyone know if there are any schools of Buddhism that do not require a four year degree for ordination? It seems like most Japanese schools do, Jodo Shinshu definitely does, and in Jodo Shu the training for monks is equivalent to...

Re: Privacy Please!
I'm surprised you haven't thought of it yourself. Chaz, Thank you for the suggestions. While I mention this coming Thanksgiving as an example, that isn't what my experience is limited to. Sometimes I have friends who stay over at my place for various reasons which, being quite a small single "...

Re: Privacy Please!
I don't always have the privacy for sitting (shamatha) meditation - especially prolonged sittings. This coming Thanksgiving will be a case in point. While I might could get away for 5 minutes, that privacy would definitely be interrupted. I am wondering if there are other things which I might could...

Re: Trungpa Rinpoche's "Crazy Wisdom" & the Steinbecks
Karma is general prefix to karma kagyu students refuge names is all. Funny that. I study/practice in the Karma Kagyu lineage. Niether my Refuge name or the name I recieved when I took Bodhisattva vows has the word "Karma" in it. No one I know personally has "Karma" in their name...

Once again, since you didn't get it the first time, I seriously do not care in the least about your seeming obsession with Trungpa Rinpoche and I hope that you have better things to do with your life than feeding on internet gossip. I'm leaving on retreat in a few minutes, so peace out... I don't t...

Re: Buddhist ethics and BDSM?
No problem, Chaz. ;) The notion of God in Abrahamic religions is much deeper than the "sky-daddy" expression Pema used. I think he really meant "sky-daddy" by reading what he says after, as in a poor interpretation of what theism can be. Many people- not all obviously- that beli...

Re: Buddhist ethics and BDSM?
What we can do as Buddhists is look at ethics in terms of what fruit we want to give rise to and which thoughts/speech/actions do or don't lead to that fruit, instead of looking at it in terms of being a good little boy or girl and following sky-daddy's arbitrary commandments and judgments so we ca...

This domination crap is harmful for the sprititual practice. And you know this because ....... Food, the truth is there are a whole lotta things that are "harmful" to practice. I find that participating in online discussion forums can have a detrimental effect on practice. The right sort ...

Plus, pleasure is being sought in the Three Poisons: Desire, Hatred, and Ignorance. This, too, can only lead to further suffering. Dude, that is the case in just about everything, not just rough nookie. You might as well check out of the planet, because there's NOTHING that doesn't qualify as falli...

Re: Logistics of Finding a Teacher
I wish my teacher lived four hours away. Same here! My Guru i 1/2 - way accross the country. @mint: Keep this in mind - finding/meeting the guru will happen when it's time. You can't really force it. Your relationship to the guru is beyond meeting and parting. Time and distance are meaningless. The...

Re: Using a mala
Thank you. I have a second question. I have also heard that there are correct and incorrect ways of holding the mala and proper and improper directions to twirl (if that's the right word) the beads. Could someone speak to that? For most practices you would count the beads with your left hand, drawi...
