Re: Renunciation as path of Sutra: sources?
I think I may have found the answer to my own question, and it's more interesting than I expected! The Yogini's Eye is apparently the foundational textbook for tantra in the Sakya School, and its Chapter 4 contrasts Sutra, summarized as the path of renunciation, with Tantra, the path of non-renuncia...

Re: Renunciation as path of Sutra: sources?
Thank you all very much! What I am looking for is a statement that renunciation is uniquely the essence of Sutrayana. There's no doubt that it's an important aspect—there's tons of scriptures that say so. Loppön Malcom , this is just what I'm hoping to find. I don't suppose you have a textual source...

Renunciation as path of Sutra: sources?
Chögyal Namhkai Norbu Rinpoche characterizes Sutra as the vehicle whose path is renunciation. This certainly seems accurate to me. However, I've had difficulty finding any other source that says the same. Renunciation is regarded as an aspect of the sutric paths, but nowhere else does it seems to be...

Re: The Aro gTér: some answers and questions
Adamantine, yes, the distinction between terma and other re-presentation is worth being clear about. (Although, according to Guru Chöwang, ultimately, all Dharma is terma.) My characterization of the list of 1980s developments as "termas" was a slip, inasmuch as Tarthang Tulku's work was n...

Re: The Aro gTér: some answers and questions
Kali Ma is an Aro student, but not an Aro teacher. She teaches other things. I like her very much as a friend and vajra sister. From what little I know about the material she teaches, I don't think it would appeal to me. But she has many devoted students, so she must be an excellent teacher. There h...

Re: The Aro gTér: some answers and questions
I"m not familiar with this one outside of the Aro context. An example of an innovation? Yes, it's quite possibly unique to Aro. Hybrid yidams are a typical form of variation between termas. For example, in one of Chogyam Trungpa's termas, there is a yidam that that is fundamentally Padmasambha...

Re: The Aro gTér: some answers and questions
For a Buddhist system to work, it has to have accurate teachings, and authentically effective practices, and it needs to package those in a presentation style that is comprehensible and attractive for its students. In my Buddhist Geeks podcast, which Jens mentioned, I rail against mainstream "C...

Re: The Aro gTér: some answers and questions
Red was pu**y blood: White was semen: And Blue was the central channel Yes, this is the way I've always heard it. I was being euphemistic in saying "white symbolizes bodhicitta"; bodhicitta=semen in the tantras. Does the potential student "gamble" on an unauthenticated terma, or...

Re: The Aro gTér: some answers and questions
Astus, I am reasonably familiar with Nyingma doctrines, having read well over a hundred books on the subject. That does not make me a serious scholar, but I'm not ignorant or a beginner. I've never found any contradictions between the Aro gTér and other Nyingma Dharma. There's really nothing "w...

asunthatneversets, maybe your friend knows something I don't... I've never heard that white=death symbolism, but it could be. heart/magnus, Ah, yes, I see. I addressed that at http://approachingaro.org/did-aro-lingma-exist" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . Skepticism about t...

The Aro gTér: some answers and questions
This is in reply to a thread about Aro from a couple of days ago. It closed before I saw it. I write a site called "Approaching Aro" that may answer most questions. There's a "Controversy FAQ" there that might be particularly useful. Here I'll answer some of the questions that ar...
