I just got Compassion and Emptiness and it seems a clear and informed discussion. I appreciate the comments here a lot.

Re: the difference between Prajñāparāmita and Madhyamaka
This sounds like fair criticism. In science it is finding a fact that doesn't fit the frame that gives one the go ahead to try a new frame. No, it’s the lack of evidence behind his theory and his rather strange reasoning (“show me the Sanskrit original or it must be a forgery!”)

Re: the difference between Prajñāparāmita and Madhyamaka
This is why we need to rely on commentaries. Otherwise we end up taking a few characters (以无所得故) and speculating into existence entire approaches to meditation for which we have minimal evidence. Jayarava would have us throw out centuries of writing because he has a different theory about the meani...

Re: the difference between Prajñāparāmita and Madhyamaka
The question is whether "non-apprehension" is a meditative state. This is what Jayarava has been claiming but I don't think that's supported by the texts. I also am not sure Orsborn suggests that. In the article above he refers to it as a meditative state. But perhaps his other work is mo...

An Investigation into Emptiness Parts One & Two [Venerable Yinshun, English translation by Shi Huifeng] Kōng zhī Tànjìu 空之探究) (1985), An excellent study unfortunately almost unknown outside of the sphere of Buddhist studies in Chinese language.1 It covers the doctrine of emptiness as it develope...

the difference between Prajñāparāmita and Madhyamaka
I think with a discussion of the Heart Sutra it would help refresh me and maybe some others too to rehearse the difference between Prajñāparāmita and Madhyamaka as to view, practice, key terms and the 2 truths... and as Buddhist Movements as well. I believe that Nagarjuna's use of reductum critique ...

I have a translation of his Heart Sutra commentary and will check it out.
Thanks
PS: by way of full disclosure... I believe a non-Indian origin for 'authentic' Buddhist speach is acceptable.

Re: A Review or List of Proto-mahayana Sutras?
It has been apparant for some decades that what we call Mahayana was an era in which new sutras emerged which featured a range of new ideas... each a different 'take' on what Buddhism could be. So there were multiple Mahayanas so to speak. Then decades passed in which new sutras emerged which embrac...
