Re: Western Myth of Zen

Astus wrote:Could you give some examples of those Zen communities where they give a well rounded Buddhist teaching?
Well, I offer a sunday school in buddhist teaching in a Kwan Um centre that I run in my town. It's an example.

Re: When Right Speech seems to give bad fruits

Non-Violent Communication? Never heard..., but thanks for the tip ;) Hi Nostam I second those who advise NVC. For me it was the second most powerful thing after I found Dharma. I am sure that the creator - Marshall Rosenberg has some kind of spiritual insight. In my country probably half of the NVC...

Re: Mechanism of retribution

I think that what you wrote falls under the category of the fruit of karma being modified by other karma. I try to find the answer whether any of these people's past actions could cause a chain of events that lead to what happened with cars and flowers. I am starting to suspect that it might be a fo...

Re: Mechanism of retribution

@catmoon I used the word retribution because it seems accepted among some scholars. Sure, there is no judge acting and what you wrote is true. @futerko Of course, the largest part is internal and the emphasis in the teachings is put on the internal aspect. But there is also another 'field' of the wo...

Re: Essential Zen Practice

Sitting meditation is just a small part of a Zen monastery's programme, initially assuming a sitting posture is helpful for beginners. Not in Korea it's not :P A seon monastery runs two 3+month angos + additional shorter angos in between longer angos. A meditation monk can literally spend half of h...

Mechanism of retribution

Hello, I have a problem with understanding some aspects of link between karma and karma-phala especially as taught in the Mahayana. Can anyone explain how is it exactly that my past deeds are able to cause external events to become their fruit. In is common to hear teachers talk that if I experience...

OK, you have a point there but Buswell writes about Chinul's thought in terms of syncretic or "ecumenical" approach to buddhism and eclectical approach to meditation which seems to support my argument.

Re: are the jhanas taught in zen/chan?

Maybe what I'll say is too general but there seems to be too much importance given to Zongmi here. Zongmi seems to be really appreciated by historians and intellectuals because unlike the Honhgzhou masters he gives some insight to the theory and some framework to work with. Today his classifications...

Re: are the jhanas taught in zen/chan?

I would agree with Astus on this one. Btw, I think that OP's question isn't limited to jhanas as in the Pali Canon but also to corresponding dhyanas, am I right? Of course in the countries where mahayana assumed a more syncretic form like China and Korea it is not easy to distinguish which practice ...

Malcom, you're like the chan master Te-Shan who burned the Diamond Sutra commentaries that he had written. Sounds very sincere and very inspiring. Best wishes on your path.

Re: Varieties of Ganhwa Seon Teachings in Contemporary Korea

I would assume it is a "borrowed" practice because it was Hakuin who organised the Rinzai curriculum in the way it is today with many levels of koans. The guy didn't really say that there was a curriculum, just that he went through the major collections. Seung Sahn's gates are also not re...

Re: Varieties of Ganhwa Seon Teachings in Contemporary Korea

For instance, Seon masters in Korea generally do not ask their student to resolve a series of different gong’an gates. I used to repeat that thought to many people until I read an interview with a student of Seongcheol Sunim in the last issue of "Budddhism & Culture". Seongcheol Sunim...

Re: Buddhahood in Chan

Also note that like in the case of Seung Sahn, mantras are only used as objects for meditation without any extra value, unlike in tantric teachings where mantras have a meaning. Hi Astus, The mantras and other practices were taught by Seung Sahn in two different ways. There is always the core zen a...

Non-tantric sleep practices

Hi :)

I have a question - have you heard about sleep practices in EA buddhism? I remember Ven. Yin Shun mentioning visualizing white light berfore falling asleep. Does anyone know more about this? What school or scripture does it come from? What's its purpose?

Thanks,
Piotr

Re: Pointing out instructions

Basically every buddhist school created a chart which clearly prooves that a) it's teaching are the best b) the author can trace his lineage back to Shakyamuni Buddha. Zen also has quite a few of them. For instance classification proposed by Zongmi - it clearly prooves that zen is definitely better ...

Re: Book explores 30 wonders of Korean Buddhism

Apparently, prof. Mason published the articles gathered in the book on his website.

If you follow the links they'll direct you to the articles beautifully adorned with plastic surgery ads. Ah, Korea :)

Best,
Piotr
