Re: Do any ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts give practical advice?

Now there--the quoted advice Namdrol just posted--is a fine example indeed of the kind of advice that is timeless. Those kinds of statements work, whether the reader lived 2500 years ago, or has yet to be born. If that's not practical advice, then I have no idea what is.

Re: Do any ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts give practical advice?

I've noticed that most classic Tibetan Buddhist texts are generally written from the standpoint of a Buddhist saint (Shantideva's book, The Wheel of Sharp Weapons, etc.). Most of these texts don't directly give a modern person answers to questions like "Are Buddhists allow to do X? What's the ...

Re: My cat suffered a stroke today

I find that I agree with Silent Bob and DN. I too have been a pet owner for many years, having grown up with cats on the family farm and having almost always had at least one of my own in any place I lived. I've had to make this decision several times, and it never gets any easier. Now that I know t...

Re: Permission to practice: prerequisites?

Sure, usually when you take a dharmapala inititation, you have comittments to make offerings on a daily or monthly basis. Also, generally, as we mentioned, one usually needs to have received a highest yoga tantra empowerment. But, these things are also at the discretion of the teacher. N I have hea...

Re: Men's Juzu/Women's Juzu

Traditionally, a buddhist mala (sanskrit="garland") has 108 beads. Divide by 4 and you have 27. I don't know anything about tassles. FWIW, the one that HHDL presented to a (male) friend of mine years and years ago has a turquoise-blue tassel on it. ::shrugs:: Seems to me if that's all rig...

Re: Permission to practice: prerequisites?

They have all kinds of practice text listed on that page that seem not to require empowerments, but in fact most of them do. N This is what I mean when I say "there seem to be contradictions." The FPMT site (which is all I have had to work with, until discovering Deer Park--and which I tr...

Re: Permission to practice: prerequisites?

Starglade- I'd recommend that you ask about whether refuge vows will be bestowed prior to the event. If so, you should take them--there's absolutely no sense in obtaining a "permission to practice" Palden Lhamo, or any other Vajrayana practice, prior to having taken formal refuge. Also, I...

Re: Permission to practice: prerequisites?

Thank you both for responding. I actually just received a reply from a member of the staff, who indicates that I can indeed take the permission to practice. "Deer Park activities are not limited to students" and if there were prerequisites, they would be mentioned in the info (which there...

Permission to practice: prerequisites?

Forgive this very, very basic question, but I have been practicing on my own for some time now and have only recently found a local group with which I want to begin working. This weekend, there will be a Permission to Practice given for Palden Lhamo. As I have not formally taken refuge with this gro...

I think it was somewhere on page 3, with the discussion of cultural and societal influences on practitioners' decisions to wear/not wear dharma clothes.

Re: Views on Dharma clothes

So, do you wear Dharma clothes? If so, what do you wear, when and where, and, most importantly, why? If not, why not? I think I know what you're asking, but I admit I'm not familiar with the term. I have a familiarity with "ritual clothes" from my Wiccish (not really Wiccan, but similar, ...
