Re: Breathing frequency during breath watching meditation
I'm also shocked at the idea of achieving 2 breaths a minute. Compared to that I hyperventilate like crazy when meditating, and small thoughts come freely.

Re: Kalu Rinpoche: Panned in San Francisco
The lama seemed more nonplussed by Kalu Rinpoche, than anything.
Kalu Rinpoche was here in Vancouver, recently. I should have gone to see him, but stupidly I did not.. everyone I talked to about him here seemed quite impressed, though.

Re: Prostrations= Punishment?
I'm also a member of Nalandabodhi and I can't wait to begin prostrations. Sticking with shamatha for now, though. Plenty of physical issues to sort out with posture, etc. Is there a reason the Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche allows 11,000 prostrations instead of the usual number? Some seem to believe it's ...

Ain't that the truth. What I wouldn't give for a stable, mature, versatile desktop environment built on top of X11 and that kernel.maybay wrote:Linux is not a desktop environment. Its a bootable kernal with a file system and a few other hardware related doodabs.

Re: Poll: Which Operating System Do You Use?
Windows does indeed suck, but I'm condemned to using it if I want to play the occasional new PC game. Linux sucks too, because its state as a desktop environment is pathetically below par. I have Snow Leopard running on 6 year old Macbook Pro, and it's very good. I think my next tower computer will ...

Re: three doors to liberation
I think my understanding is off. What does 'signlessness' refer to? The best I can guess is 'empty of appearance' but shouldn't that just fall under emptiness?

Re: Milarepa & yoga
Here's a good reading list, by the way: http://musingsbyken.blogspot.com/2010/0 ... -list.html
I failed to mention it before, but "Mindfulness in Plain English" is great for starting shamatha. It's pretty widely available.

Re: Milarepa & yoga
I don't know. You could practice phowa, try for rebirth in a Buddha realm.. of course, the very fact you're able to meet the Dharma means you had a connection to it in a previous life, which ought to continue, down the line..

Re: Milarepa & yoga
You can start shamatha right away, provided you can find good written instructions or a practice group, neither of which is hard to do. You're generally expected to have a good foundation in shamatha before beginning anything like ngondro anyway, so it's good to start as soon as you can. Also, when ...

Re: Cause, Effect, & Holocaust
Beings aren't cognizant of cause and effect, and become the hapless victims of their own ignorance. There's no sense of justice or fairness in that at all.

He's a stubborn guy, I wouldn't count on him to investigate Buddhism on his own. I want to find a self-contained reply.

Re: Escapism,Buddhism, and the Soul
#2 is very common. I had a philosophy professor who constantly argued that point in reference to Buddhism. He described enlightenment as a kind of psychological nihilism in which everything, good and bad, is drained of meaning. How should you give a response to that? I feel that mine is lousy.

Breathing technique
How should you breathe while doing shamatha? A bit of background: I'm somewhat tall and very lanky. My lung collapsed when I was 17, and my posture has always been pretty horrible. I can't sit comfortably for long in meditation, mostly due to back pain, which I suspect comes from the way I normally ...

Re: sleepiness at meditation
Bokar Rinpoche wrote that, to combat sleepiness in meditation, you should peel your eyes wide open and imagine you're looking at the sky. Works wonders. I had constant feelings of drowsiness when I first started meditating daily, which was only 2+ months ago.. now they're completely gone, and I can ...

I'm currently reading Confessions of a Gypsy Yogini: Experience Through Mistakes. I had the pleasure of meeting the author and listening to her speak a few nights ago. It's very good.

Re: Existential Issues
If this is the case, then how much stronger influence must a person's previous religion have over them? I think a lot of that is cultural and not just karmic (of course, the culture you're born into also has to do with karma.. but we all know that :P). A lot of people I know whose parents were immi...

Re: Existential Issues
Does anyone else ever go through a crisis, where you feel like maybe you should never have left the religion in which you were raised? I was very content and happy for a long time, and then suddenly went through some issues with lots of guilt and confusion. Has anyone else been through something li...
